sunday on the beach

semi-overcast 40 °C

I walked to my new place to sleep. I was to set up my hammock for the first time and sleep in it.

I settled down among others who were still sleeping, asked the hippie guys at the reception for a jungle tour, and set out for the gorgeous beach. It was Sunday so it was quite crowded. I decided to mingle with brazilian families instead of running away to a quiet corner. People were sitting in water on white plastic chairs around tables with sun shades, an ingenious idea that should be stolen by greeks and turks.

I sat at a table, put my chair in the water, asked for shrimps and cold beer. The waiter arranged the shade so that I was completely protected from the sun. Heaven!

Brazilian families were eating, drinking, having a tour with “the banana”, having a swim, and coming back to these chairs. They all stayed in water the whole day. I couldn’t. I had a caipirinha (2€ a glass!!) to close my beach session and headed back to town for food.

I had a delicious shrimp soup from the food stalls and later noticed the stuff they were putting into it from a pan. It looked like the gooey stuff from the film alien. I am glad I saw it after I had the soup.

Back at the hammock place, I did some laundry in my bucket, hung it to dry. Your washing doesn’t dry for 2 days because of humidity but neither does your tobacco, even if you leave your tobacco case unzipped. I got hungry again and I had no food. Town was far and in the square, the church chorus was singing jingle bells. I approached two german girls who were cooking. They offered me some food which was delicious and I tried to eat little, pretending I am not actually hungry but only trying new food. The hippies at the reception said the tour is organized. The guide is coming to pick some people up from thereat 8 o’clock in the morning and I could go with them if I wanted to.” My wet washing?” “Jungle tour with my wet washing?”.. were the first questions that echoed in my mind. I also had no idea about the programme, should I bring drinking water? How many days? Etc etc.. the german girls turned out to be joining the tour. I couldn’t get too much information from them either but at least I knew it was for 2 nights and I didn’t have to bring drinking water. Enough info to start the trip.
